VISUAL ARTS AT 79 Endell Street

Thanks to the generosity of many donors, the Swiss Church in London has completed a major programme of renovation and internal extension designed by the Swiss architects Christ & Gantenbein.

The idea behind the renovation programme was and remains, next to serving as a place of worship for the 20,000 or so Swiss community in and around London, to turn the venerable Swiss Church at Endell Street into an outstanding new spiritual and cultural venue in London.

With its location, historical background, noteworthy architecture and now innovative interior design, magnificent spaces and first class acoustics, the Swiss Church will provide a wide range of artists, primarily young artists, with an emphasis on those concerned with spiritual values and other social issues, with a platform to support their international careers.

The Swiss Church aims to welcome a variety of visual art events throughout the year. It is proposed that the Arts Committee will annually select different themes as guidelines for the exhibitions, artist in residence, lectures, discussions, and other events taking place in the Swiss Church. Swiss, as well as international sculptors, performers, painters, graphic filmmakers and photographers, will be invited to create and exhibit their works.

The Swiss Church is anxious to keep this new venue open, available and hospitable, sustained by the values of curiosity, tolerance and solidarity. There will not be a cultural director; instead there will be an ad-hoc cultural committee, working together with existing cultural institutions, hosting or co-producing events, works and performances.

Through cooperation with other institutions, it will also encourage cross border projects and foster cultural exchanges between the UK and Switzerland.
