Fundraising Appeal
The Swiss Church is planning to embark on a £ 2 m building project. It will provide a much needed renovation as well as widen the use of its building.
The Swiss Church will continue to be a place of worship and in addition will also offer a space for cultural and communal activities.
Building a Swiss Spiritual and Cultural Presence in London
Our distinguished 19th century building in London’s Covent Garden is in need of renovation; and this has given us a strategic opportunity to rethink the way we use the space - profiting from the imagination and expertise of Swiss architects Christ & Gantenbein.
The project mainly consists of shortening the existing gallery by one bay and concentrating the new spaces at the street end of the church. With this intervention, the big hallrecovers its original elegant proportions. The organ is moved away from the front of the church and is shifted towards the middle of the main hall. It sits on a cantilevered gallery and covers the entrance into the big hall.
Community and spirituality are inevitably interwoven, so combining a worshipping community with a cultural and communal programme makes sense. The transformed Swiss Church will give the Swiss community the opportunity to meet, to keep in touch with its roots, share its heritage and to explore new developments.
Visitors from the UK and from abroad will experience a Swiss Church different from the one they might expect – innovative and open, exploring and creative.
